waits' smokey, gravely voice singing.  "two dead ends and you still have to choose".
His music is quirky and brilliant, like the man himself, i imagine.  his characters are truckers, waitresses, drug dealers, down and outers, pimps, prostitutes and drunks.  they stagger against the odds.  he is one of the great storytellers of our time. his work is bluesy and dark; very clever and haunting, too.
